FEED the children of Rwanda, one bag at a time

FEED Projects was started in 2006 when acclaimed model and activist Lauren Bush designed a bag to benefit the United Nations World Food Program's (WFP) School Feeding operations. Lauren, a WFP Honorary Spokesperson who has visited eight WFP food aid operations around the world, was inspired by the plight of the people she met on her travels. She took a special interest in WFP's School Feeding program, which feeds and educates hungry children.

Inspired by the aesthetic of the bags of food distributed by WFP, she created the FEED 1 bag, a reversible burlap and cotton bag stamped with "FEED the children of the world" and the number "1" to signify that each bag feeds one child in school for one year.

At the UN, Lauren met then-WFP Communications Officer Ellen Gustafson and they hatched a plan to use FEED bags to FEED the world. In 2007, Lauren and Ellen founded FEED Projects, LLC and started selling FEED 1 bags in April of 2007. By the end of 2007, they raised donations for WFP to feed over 37,500 hungry children in school for one year. In 2008, FEED Projects various partnerships will lead to over $4 million for WFP school feeding.

FEED bags are made with sustainable materials and are designed to be used as an alternative to disposable paper and plastic bags. This environmental and fair labor commitment is an added value in all FEED products.

The goal of FEED Projects is to market and sell as many FEED bags as possible and to FEED and educate the world's 400 million hungry children. FeedProjects.org

This is a great idea, and has been very popular with the celebrities!

Seeking Obama Fashions, Visitors Crash J. Crew’s Web Site

This is from The New York Times

Some inauguration viewers were fascinated by the historical tidbit that President Barack Obama took the oath of office on Abraham Lincoln’s Bible.

Others were more interested in the J. Crew sage green leather gloves that Michelle Obama wore to hold the Bible for her husband — not to mention the pale pink and royal blue wool coats the Obamas’ daughters wore, also from J. Crew.

Indeed, a lot of viewers apparently decided that they must own the gloves and coats themselves. In an interview with my colleague Liz Robbins at The Caucus blog, Jenna Lyons of J. Crew said, “It’s an incredible validation to have the First Family like what you’re doing.”

Maybe too much of a validation.

By Tuesday afternoon, the Web page on J. Crew’s site that features women’s gloves had crashed. By Wednesday morning, the whole women’s section of the site had crashed. Later in the day, the entire site was down, with a note that said, “Stay tuned…Sorry, we’re experiencing some technical difficulties right now (even the best sites aren’t perfect). Check back with us in a little while.”

J. Crew’s Web site joins the many media sites that could not keep up with the surge of inauguration Web traffic. Many of the sites that promised to stream live video of the inauguration struggled or failed to provide a steady stream because of the influx of traffic.

I have thrown so many shower over the years, I sure wish I had found this website about seven years ago! It is so hard to find unique, quality shower favors. Beau-Coup.com has a ton! It is like striking gold! I am so excited. I am throwing a girlfriends shower at the end of February, and these little cupcake mixes were exactly what I was looking for. Each mix is made from the finest ingredients available and comes complete with recipe and cooking instructions - combine with fresh ingredients from your kitchen, bake, and savor the sweet taste of heaven! Yields one dozen cupcakes (or two dozen minis!) and comes with your choice of a white gloss or natural-colored box. Each box measures 3" x 3" x 3". Don't forget to order a couple extra and bake for your guests to snack on. Beau-Coup.com

Important note about proper child restraints.

A Cautionary Tale

I am not normally one to use scare tactics to reinforce child passenger safety information. However, I want to share with you the story of a real-life accident, which I heard from a fellow CPS advocate. I hope you will take a few minutes to read it.

The children were seated this way: A 3-year-old in a forward-facing seat on the driver’s side, a 5-year-old in a lap/shoulder belt on the passenger side, and an 8-year-old in a lap-only belt in the middle.

The father had turned around to yell at the kids to sit properly in their seat belts. He wasn’t paying attention and ran into the back of a stopped truck, at 65 mph.

The 3-year-old had a big bruise on his stomach from an improperly positioned chest clip. It also appeared that he had whiplash, because he wouldn’t turn his head to either side.

The 5-year-old suffered huge bruises to his chest and stomach, and almost bled to death from a deep cut in his neck from the seatbelt.

The 8-year-old hit his face on the center console, breaking his nose and lower jaw. His intestines were sliced in several places from the forces of the lap belt.

One year later:

At 9, the oldest still has some hip problems and walks with the help of crutches. He developed extreme IBS and reflux after his intestines healed (they are now 8″ shorter), and has a permanent GI tube in his stomach. He’s had a ton of corrective plastic surgery and is now a year behind in school.

The youngest is 4. Mentally, he is doing the worst. He no longer speaks, has anxiety attacks in public places, and still fights getting in the car.

The middle boy, now 6, still has a large scar on his neck, but is otherwise OK.

The entire family is still in therapy.

Please remember to keep your children properly restrained for their age, size, and maturity level. And please, please, PLEASE do not use a lap-only seat belt for anything other than installing a harnessed car seat.

If the 3-year-old’s car seat had been installed with the lap-only belt, the 8-year-old probably would’ve been fine sitting with just a lap/shoulder belt. The 5-year-old would have been fine if he was in a booster seat, since it would have made his seatbelt fit properly (though a harnessed seat like the one Big Brother uses would have been even better). The 3-year-old was lucky he didn’t suffer any internal bleeding from the chest clip, and his injuries would probably have been less severe if he had been rear-facing.

Again….PLEASE don’t put your kids (or adults!) in a lap-only belt. And if they’re not mature enough to sit properly in a booster, keep them harnessed!
